Avoid Hair Loss After Pregnancy

It's common for new mothers to see hair loss for a few months after giving birth. During pregnancy, the increased levels of estrogen in your body freeze your hair in the growing or "resting" phase. Once you have given birth your estrogen levels decline, and your hair that was resting can start to fall out. This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, but there are ways that you can try to prevent hair loss after pregnancy.

How to avoid hair loss after pregnancy

  • Use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. There are so many diet restrictions during and after pregnancy, it’s important to keep in mind that our hair and scalp act like sponges - make sure you use a beneficial volumizing shampoo that is chemical free like Hair La Vie’s Revitalize and Restore. Your hair will feel naturally clean and volumized because it will be no longer weighed down by buildup.
  • Add texture. Straight hairstyles make thinning hair more obvious. If you usually straighten your curly or wavy hair, now is the time to rock your natural curls. If you have straight hair, try using rollers to give your hair some texture.
  • Avoid heavy shampoo and conditioners. Heavy shampoos and conditioners weigh down your hair and can make your hair look limp. Since postpartum hair is already weak weighing it down is not the answer. Switch to a mild hair care system that has nourishing ingredients, like Revitalize and Restore :-)
  • Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet is not only good for you and your new baby, it is good for your hair. Eating foods that contain iron, biotin, and zinc - can support healthy hair growth, foods like spinach, beans, chard, and kale. Biotin can also found in beans, bananas, eggs, peanuts, lentils, cauliflower and salmon. These types of whole foods are a great way to get vitamins naturally and support a healthy hair.
  • Take a hair vitamin. Taking a hair growth vitamin, like Hair la Vie’s Revitalizing Hair Blend, that is all-natural and contains vitamin C, B, vitamins such as Biotin and Niacin have been shown to be essential for hair growth. They help maintain shiny, healthy hair and provide the extra nutrients your hair needs.

The good news is that this postpartum shedding is temporary. As long as you use a mild cleaning system and maintain a healthy you, there's no need to panic. Most women see their hair return to normal by their child’s first birthday. Some women regain normal fullness even earlier.
